Match Report: Sheffield Star - Green 'Un: 14th February 1920:

HALIFAX TOWN v LEEDS UNITED

A large crowd gathered on the Halifax Town ground this afternoon for the first visit of Leeds United. The opening play was even and Halifax were the first to be dangerous, Heath striking the upright with a strong shot. For Leeds Birtles headed wide, from a well-placed corner kick. The Leeds forwards combined well and were kept out of shooting range only with difficulty. For the homesters, Wild put in a fine shot which struck Rounds' foot, the nearest approach to a goal so far. Mason for Leeds and Smith for Halifax were the dangerous men and required constant watching. On the restart Halifax were aggressive and O'Rourke missed narrowly. Rounds saved brilliant from Wild, a save which seemed impossible. Play travelled from one end of the field to another, but neither side could find the net. Shooting positions were attained frequently, but the defence of each teamwere reliable and resourceful. The home team made a persistent attack and Wilks and O'Rourke missed by inches. Towards the end play became very rough, both elevens making desperate efforts to get through and snatch victory. However, neither side could.
